FLORIDA REQUIREMENTS & AUTHORITIES

A clearer path
for your application.

Florida’s Department of Health administers biomedical waste requirements through county health departments. Start with the county where your facility operates and the waste your services generate. This service focuses on healthcare waste generators; transport, storage, and treatment businesses have separate permit pathways.

Official requirements & application resources

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Before your consultation.

Is an exemption automatic for a small practice?

No. DOH requires a permitted facility seeking exemption to document that it generated less than 25 pounds in each 30-day period during the previous 12 months. Submit the exemption request and supporting records through the county.

Does an exemption remove all biomedical waste obligations?

No. DH 4089 describes an exemption from permit and fee requirements only. Applicable handling and other requirements continue; an exemption does not authorize longer storage or pickup intervals.

Does hiring a waste company replace the application?

Arrange both the facility’s applicable permit or exemption process and its waste service arrangements. SDC can help organize the administrative preparation; the county determines the application outcome.
